Inspired by Gary Hustwit's Objectified, I present my creation,
The Nosbox
What is a Nosbox? Simple. A modern or 'Nostalgic' boombox. After watching Objectified, I started to come back to what certain designers, particularly Karim Rashid, Anthony Dunne, Fiona Raby, & Chris Bangle. Rashid certainly played a larger role in my design process.
Rashid spoke of why some designs don't change, for example, a camera. He argued we should restricted to non-existent factors, in a camera's case, there's no need film anymore. Ironically, some of his designs are 'nostalgic' or are in a retro-futuristic style. Nostalgia and the present all being interconnected really resonated with me, which led me to decide on redesigning a Boombox, because I've found music being a medium which can use nostalgia to the best extent
First and foremost, I looked at how to modernize a Boombox for a modern public because unfortunately, it can be quite cumbersome. I kept what Rashid said about nostalgic designs in mind which is why I thought of why a Boombox has to be square. We have speakers now that are spheres, poles, and other more convenient shapes. Dunne & Raby and their Robots series come in with an unconventional and human dependent design approach which I incorporated. This is why the product is more rounded and also has a shoulder rest built into the bottom of the central hub.
Finally, Bangle inspired the color scheme, but also the organic design. His statement cars and their faces, and how they are our 'avatars', is why the Nosbox is more organic in design since a square has little life or energy, personally, in turn making it more of an object than a belonging. It is also why the colors are a reflection of what I like rather than a neutral grey or white.
