What Is Papercraft & How can it be done?
What is Papercraft? Well, exactly what sounds like. The Crafting of art and objects through a paper medium. How it can be applied is a much broader spectrum, which can be seen through the work of Zim & Zou, two French, Dordogne-based artists, Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmerman, both which work in a variety of crafting materials such as wood, thread, and of course, paper!
Zim & Zou's Work
It would be almost impossible to pick a singular work of Zim and Zou and call it their best. The attention to detail in Exodus(Below) for example is incredible. Each airship holds the same volume of detail as the others which really says something about their dedication to their work. Even their simpler works such as those in Back To Basics, though less intricate, has much more "Industrial" level of design(Not to say the more illustrative works are not well crafted) to make up for the simpler forms. While the visual detail they seem to have mastered is plentiful, so is the technical detail. In the Walkman from Back To Basics, for example, has the ability to insert a Cassette, which was also made in Papercraft, the Cassette has the little rolls within it, the Walkman has the buttons, sliders, and ports all over. It even includes a headset. Just with the functionality alone really shows their attention to detail.
Then comes their color choices, which at least personally, really evokes the feeling or atmosphere the objects give and come from. Back To Basics for example has very popish, vibrant colors which frankly we don't see in current times as much; but we did in the time which these objects are from. There more scenic works such as Forest Folks and Exodus also have very atmospheric color palettes which really bring their works to life. Talk about Back To Basics, they mentioned they did not waste, at least tried very hard, any materials which in my opinion shows their devotion to being artists participating in the modern society of the world.
Personal Thoughts and Impressions
I found that looking through their work never got really boring or even a little bit at that. The combination of craft, detail, and color really gives constant shocks of emotions and appreciation for the amount of effort that goes into each project. A good instance of this is Back To Basics and the process the came with it. According to Softoyhobby.com, Zim and Zou would take around 2 days to get mocked up, followed by 2 weeks of detailing. Take into account how small and simple it is and compare it their other works and I can only imagine the amount of energy and attention devoted to their pieces. While I lack that connection to my work sometimes, I find artists, such as Zim & Zou, really inspiring, especially after seeing their pieces and process. Both the process and article are linked below as well their website.
